Clarification on Using Two InTouch Runtime Licenses on Same PC (With and Without I/O)

Dear AVEVA Support Team,

I hope you are doing well.

We are currently working on a customer project that involves the AVEVA InTouch 2020 HMI platform. The customer has an existing 1,000-tag runtime license without I/O, which they are using for internal scripting and memory tags. Now, they want to bring in data from a weighing scale via OPC (connected over RS232), which would require real-time I/O tags.

To avoid upgrading the full license, we are considering purchasing an additional 500-tag InTouch runtime license with I/O.

We would like to clarify the following:

  • Can both licenses (1,000-tag without I/O and 500-tag with I/O) be installed and used on the same PC?

  • Will InTouch runtime detect and use the smaller I/O license for PLC/OPC tags, while the rest of the application continues to use memory/script tags under the larger no-I/O license?

  • Or, does the system only support a single active license per machine (in which case the license with the higher tag count would override the smaller one, even if it has no I/O capability)?

Understanding this will help us recommend the correct licensing path to our customer—whether to upgrade the existing license or deploy I/O functionality on a separate system.

We would appreciate your official clarification or documentation, if available.

Thank you for your support.

  • Hi,

I recommend that if you already have InTouch licensed for that node, you can simply purchase the AVEVA Communication Drivers Standard Edition license, which will include the communication driver(s) you need. There is no need to get a second InTouch licenses unless you need to run more than one session.

    Basically,

    • InTouch "without I/O" is just plain InTouch without any Com Drivers included.
    • The Communication Drivers Pack can be purchased separately, as "AVEVA Communication Drivers"
      • Standard Edition includes all drivers
      • Professonal Edition adds furthere scalability
      • (Premier Edition is not applicable to InTouch)
    • InTouch "with I/O" is simply a bundling of InTouch and the Communication Drivers Pack Standard Edition

You can actually have multiple InTouch licenses in the same license server, but you may want to use the License Manager to reserve the specific license you want your session to claim (in case the server has licenses of different size or feature set).
