Roadmap PlantScada 2020 (Citect 2018 R2) - Focus Remote Access and Licensing Setup

Hi,

I would like to get some insight and comments from AVEVA on the Roadmap regarding Remote Access setup for the Plant Scada 2020. As I understand this is Citect Scada 2018 R2 in new naming? Please fill in and correct me if I've misunderstood.

The current arrangement needed to setup remote access with Citect Scada 2018 R2 as I know it, is heavily loaded with various licenses. And if you would like to use Citect AnyWhere you need Server setup with RDP licensing as well.

I've been comparing same remote access feature with Ignition Scada system and in a test case from our local distributor for both Citect and Ignition, the total price for Citect (hwr, licenses, Citect AnyWhere) was approx. 56k$. The same features with Ignition Scada, was approx. 30k$. I know we cant compare these systems 1 to 1 but, the initial price difference is significant, and as mention this is mainly licensing.

Integrated operations and remote access solutions has high focus among our customers, as we see this focus world wide, I'm sure this is on AVEVA table daily as well.

I've been working with many different Scada systems the last 25 years and even though I'm quit "rookie" to Citect Scada I don't doubt in my statement claiming Citect is one of the best and most robust Scada system out there. But we are all getting challenged by customers and our Boards to reduce cost.

Looking forward to your comment and how the road map is planned.

Thanks

Rune Johannessen

  • Hi ,

We are in the process of rebranding Citect SCADA to Plant SCADA.

    Citect SCADA 2018 R2 = v8.20
Plant SCADA 2020 R2 (the next release in two weeks) = v8.30

The coming version of Plant SCADA will include AVEVA Industrial Graphics (AIG) with native HTML5 support. The licensing is simplified, in that you just require 1 license on the AIG Web Server. I'm not sure of cost, but reach out to your local AVEVA Sales rep for details.

It might be worth you exploring the options provided by AVEVA Flex (Subscription service) to reduce CapEx.

Please note that the new Web Graphics (AIG HTML5 Web Client) will be a "1.0" release and not fully feature comparable to the native graphics in Citect SCADA. In initial release it will support I/O data only with some AIG graphics templates provided. In subsequent releases we will add Alarm and Trend data and further functionality.

Here is a short post about the transition to the new brand:

Citect SCADA to AVEVA Plant SCADA
As you'll have noticed, we've undergone a transition from Citect SCADA to AVEVA Plant SCADA, which you can think of like a new coat of paint; a new name and a fresh new look, but with the same reliability, scalability and flexibility you’ve come to expect from the Citect platform!

As a result of this transition this release includes updates to splash screens and graphics, icons, installer and installation directories, Start Menu paths, and more. However, Plant SCADA still supports direct upgrade (online and offline) from Citect SCADA versions - see the online help for more details. After installation, look for us under AVEVA Plant SCADA within the Start Menu.
  • Hi Rune,

    Thanks for your question.

The upcoming Plant SCADA release introduces new 'Industrial Graphics' functionality, which is an established technology available across the AVEVA HMI-SCADA portfolio and provides native access from HTML5 browsers on laptops, tablets and mobile devices for remote access.
While the initial release of Industrial Graphics in Plant SCADA 2020 R2 (you haven't missed 2020 - we just went straight to 2020 R2) is limited to read-only access via the browser, this will be matured in future releases of Plant SCADA to eventually support both high-performance desktop and web runtime clients with full read-write permissions, providing an alternative for existing native Citect graphics within the control room environment. This will be a consistent theme of our roadmap going forward as we continue to mature and enhance our remote operations capabilities.
From a licensing perspective, we are providing unlimited* Industrial Graphics client sessions when purchased under our AVEVA Flex subscription plans.

Regarding licensing of Citect/Plant SCADA in general, I encourage you to evaluate our AVEVA Flex subscription plans (speak to your local AVEVA Distributor), as they provide a very competitive alternative to perpetual purchase, with server redundancy and unlimited clients included in some packages at no extra cost.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Olivier/Brad,
Thanks for your response and comments.
We will check out AVEVA Flex subscription and see how we can utilize it.

Looking forward to the upcoming release of Plant SCADA.

    Rune

  • Olivier,
With the coming release of having 'native HTML5' support, does that negate the need for requiring Citect Anywhere if my customer is interested in view only? Will any graphic builder graphic support HTML5?
    thanks
    Greg Chamberland
  • Hi Greg,

Yes it certainly could, but It will depend upon your customers requirements. The 2020 R2 release is our first step of Industrial Graphics (HTML5) support with Plant SCADA/Citect.

It has different graphics capabilities to the standard graphics of Plant SCADA.

The main considerations for you will be whether you can forgo Alarm, and Citect Trend support. (You can however instant trend from I/O, or trend from Historian if you have that setup.)

    cheers,

    bradley
