licensing question

Hello,

We currently have redundant HMI configured at all our sites (Citect SCADA 2018R2 Update 14).  I added a third HMI at one of our site to be just a OPC DA server.  I have the client configured to be a view only client and added a IOServer to another machine on our network with 15 view only client licenses and 10 CtAPI licenses.  When I start runtime on this this HMI the client is getting licensed, but the OPC DA server is not.  The OPC DA server runs for 15 minutes and fails with software protection failure.  What am I doing wrong?

Thanks...

Mark

  • it could be that you don't have a server license for the OPCDA server.

  • Hi Antonio,

I thought that I read in knowledge base that the OPC DA server used a ctAPI license?  Is this not correct?   Thanks..

  • Hi  ,

What type of license are you using? Sentinel Licensing (using USB keys) or FLEXERA Softkey Licensing (FLM)?

There is a TechNote (tn000031139) which describes a special OPC DA Server only license type, which is only applicable to USB key license. This allows you to run a OPC DA Server instance on a remote machine, without requiring a Full License. It does require the node to run as a Windows Service in "headless mode" which means it has no client runtime.

My understanding is that if you want to run this Display Client (Read only license?) it must have a Full License to have the capability to run the OPC DA Server.

The confusing part is that CTAPI is counted in the "Connectivity / OPC Severs" part of your license, and the CTAPI Server actually runs in the Client process, but the OPC DA Server requires a Full License (or the special license type mentioned in the TN) to run.

The OPC DA Server (since V7.30) does not use CTAPI to get data from Citect runtime. It connects using Publish/Subscribe Interface (PSI) to get the IO Data.

If in doubt, reach out to your AVEVA Sales rep to discuss it further.

    Kind regards

    Olivier

  • Thank you Oliver.  This has helped me understand this better.  We are using USB keys and have reached out to our Sales rep.
