If i set it to localhost, do i need to put some entries into the windows 'HOSTS' file?

I am unsure on using the standard DNS servers, as the SCADA WAN domain controllers (DNS) are 300km away via radio link.

Localhost is only applicable for the standalone system. For a distributed system, you must use the machine name or fully qualified domain name. You could use ping -a [IP address] to get the associated DNS name in command line.

If I lost that radio link to the DNS servers (happens every few years), do local machines cache these results?
