Communication with ABB AC500 PLC's - is there a Plant SCADA Native driver?

Has anyone setup Plant SCADA to communicate with the ABB AC500 PLC's via a native driver?

i have about 5 of these in the plant and am currently communicating Via CoDeSys OPC Gateway Server but would prefer to use a native driver if possible, when i upgrade late this year early next year.

  • If my Google findings are correct the native protocol for this PLC model is a proprietary ABB protocol, which is a variant of a Codesys protocol via TCP port 1200. I don't think there is a native Plant SCADA driver that supports this.

I also found that these PLCs support Modbus/TCP and IEC60870-5-104 via the CPU ethernet port. This needs to be enabled through the programming software first though.

For Modbus/TCP you can use the native Plant SCADA driver called MODNET, and for IEC60870-5-104 you can use the IEC870IP driver.

I would recommend trying Modbus first as this is easier to configure and troubleshoot.

  • Thanks Patrick, i am planning an upgrade for later in the year this is very helpful to me and i appreciate your response.
