Inquiry Regarding AVEVA Plant SCADA Historian File Backup Recommendations and Automated Backup Features

Could you kindly provide any recommendations regarding the optimal backup frequency for AVEVA Plant SCADA historian files? Understanding the best practices endorsed by AVEVA would be instrumental in refining our data protection protocols.

Additionally, we are interested in exploring whether Plant SCADA has any built-in capabilities for the automated backup of historian files. Specifically, we are curious if the system allows for the automatic creation of smaller compressed files, which can then be seamlessly transferred to a designated backup folder. This feature would not only streamline our backup processes but also contribute to the efficient utilization of storage resources.

Your insights into these matters would be immensely valuable to us as we strive to ensure the continuity and security of our data. If there are specific functionalities or settings within AVEVA Plant SCADA that address these concerns, we would appreciate any guidance or documentation you could share.

    Can you share which product you are referring to?

    I'm not aware of any "Historian" files within Plant SCADA.

    There are Trend files, which basically store timestamp and value for specific tags in the system. The structure of these files are configurable by the end user when defining the trend tag (e.g. how many files, period of each file, etc.). There isn't any automatic backup functionality unfortunately. But customers typically use Plant SCADA for short term storage of tag history, and then use a Historian for long term storage (OSI PI Server or AVEVA Historian).

    With the Alarm data, there is a backup feature, by calling a function "SOEArchive". This allows you to backup the alarm history to storage.

    It might be helpful to setup a call with an AVEVA sales rep to walk through your requirements to see which product or products best suit your needs.

    Hello Olivier,

    Thank you for your detailed explanation of the data storage and backup functionalities within Plant SCADA. I am using AVEVA Plant SCADA 2020 R2 and AVEVA Historian.

    I understand now the difference between Plant SCADA's Trend files and Historian files. Plant SCADA's Trend files serve for short-term storage, while a separate Historian system is used for long-term storage needs.

    I appreciate the information on the SOEArchive function for backing up Alarm data. This could be very useful for our operations.

    I agree that discussing our specific requirements with an AVEVA sales representative would be beneficial.
