Software protection failure - Citect 2018 & software license

Hi,

Lately we are suffering intermitent software protection failure with Citect 2018, that causes System service to be restarted randomly, for example:

As you can see suddenly the license is lost and recovered again, but I don't know the problem behind, as this happens everyday, and System services is restarted and it works again.

I have found in the article TN9038 that there was a bug related to this in Citect 7.30, have someone else faced this problem in Citect 2018?

Thanks

  • Hi  ,

Taking snapshots of VMs that hve FLM v2.6 is unfortunately not supported as this modifies some attributes that the license system uses. I think the best solution is to host the license on a remote node that doesn't have snapshots taken. Or use physical USB with Anywhere USB solution.

We are hoping to integrate AVEVA Enterprise License Server (AELS) in Plant SCADA 2022 so we will have a more feature rich license architecture.

  • Hi Chris,

During snapshots VMs are running with degraded performance when the RAM contents are dumped to a file at that time. This VMWare KB article explains the details:

    https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/76687

Also, VMWare does not recommend using the snapshot mechanism as a back-up mechanism in production environments.

This, plus the fact that a FLM soft license will likely be corrupted when restoring a snapshot makes the snapshot mechanism unsuitable for Citect VMs.

If you still want to use the snapshot mechanism, for example in engineering environments, there are some workarounds that might prevent the issue or make it less likely to happen:

    - Exclude the RAM memory from the snapshot by deselecting the "Memory State" option
    - Use the "Quiescent" option so VSS will be used in the Guest OS if the OS supports it

See this Reddit article for more discussion on these options:

  • Olivier,

Thanks for this info. We are obviously miss guided years ago when we consulted with the Citect group about us transiting to VMs. We are using HyperV.

  • Check out TN8772 for details of how a license can become untrusted:

    https://softwaresupportsp.aveva.com/#/okmimarticle/docid/tn8772

I'm hopeful that switching to AELS will give Citect more flexibility in virtual environments.
