error on installation Plant SCADA 2020R2 - the installation of VC2019redist_x64 has failed

i have started on an upgrade from Citect scada to Plant Scada 2020R2.

after uninstalling Citect 2018 and rebooting machine,  i get the following error on install of Plant Scada 2020R2 very early on.

"the installation of VC2019redist_x64 has failed"

i have searched the knowledgebase but did not find anything, i have raised a case but local support is slow due to a heavy work load, i want to progress as this is my primary server and would like to move on it today.

  • issue sorted by support who took 5 hours to come back to me after 3 phone calls. not sure what the root cause was ?

  • Generally, if I get an error like that, I either find the individual installer for that prerequisite (MS VC 2019 Redist) on the install disc or download it from Microsoft and try installing it separately. It may work or may give you an error telling why it won't install (such as requiring a specific Windows Update).

  • Glad that you got it sorted out. I concur with Eric, running the installer on disk (or download direct from Microsoft) will give you more information about what is blocking the installation of the specific redist. Sometimes Windows has some update running in background, a reboot is required before you can install or missing Windows Updates.

Please note that 2020 R2 is out of mainstream support. It is recommended to use Plant SCADA 2023 R2, as it has all the latest security fixes and has the longest support lifecycle.

  • Thanks Olivier, duly noted on version support. i am currently upgrading from Citect SCADA 2018 and have to move though 2020R2 to get to 2023R2 which is my end target.

  • i downloaded and installed the latest redistributable from MS.

    aka.ms/.../vc_redist.x64.exe

still no joy. Local SCADA support advise me this is the issue as i don't have the below in my computer manager.

i cannot install the packed version ( with the installer) as its earlier than what was / is now installed (lateset is installed now), if i uninstall the newer versions  i may break something else?

can you guys confirm this? when i go to SCADA "computer setup wizard" the server properties are greyed out not allowing entries ?

    Log is attached below

  • Hi Olivier,
Do I understand correctly that 2023 R2 is marked as a long term support product?
I'm looking for an upgrade path from 2015 SP1 to a version that will last up to 7 years.
I am wondering if 2023 R2 will be a better option over the next (upcoming) release.

  • From the log, it looks like you already have a (slightly newer) MS VC 2019 package installed. That should probably work.
If your issue is just about the greyed out wizard, I would suggest checking if the current Windows user is a member of the SCADA.ConfigUsers user group.

  • Hi Patrick,

this is my problem support tell me. i do not have the items seen in highlight on my server due to the installer did not load that redistributable

Since i have a newer version, it will not load, therefore the security side does not populate. i am very hesitant to delete the newer version to allow the installer to load the older version as i may break some other functionality o the server. Local support has referred me to my IT dept (essentially saying they need to fix this) , any thoughts or help appreciated.

  • I'm confused about this:

support tell me. i do not have the items seen in highlight on my server due to the installer did not load that redistributable

If the redistributables don't install, then the PlantSCADA install aborts and none of it gets installed. So, yeah, you're missing the SCADA.xxxUsers groups, but that's because you're missing the entire product.

If the installer doesn't recognize the updated version of VC2019 Redist you currently have, you could uninstall it, then install PlantSCADA. It will install its copy of VC2019. You could either keep that (and verify your other server apps work), or re-install the updated version of VC2019 (x86 and x64 editions).

  • I'm confused as well, but i am VERY grateful for your repy Eric as when you mentioned both VC2019 (x86 and x64 editions). i then downloaded the latest x86 as well and then installed this redistributable (only did the x64 previously) and then did a complete uninstall, then Reinstall and this has corrected it.

i am happy to report that i now have my primary server and project in runtime in last 30 mins, a bit to go yet but promising so far on my upgrade journey.
